Face Pressure Q & A
What causes face pressure?
Face pressure can result from acute or chronic conditions that affect your sinuses, nasal passages, or ears.
These conditions can include:
• Sinusitis
• Allergies
• Ear infections
• Sinus infections
• Deviated septum
Houston Ear Allergy and Rhinology Surgical Associates offers comprehensive care for face pressure and the conditions that cause it.
Dr. Sana offers in-office evaluations to identify the source of face pressure and pain and customizes a care plan to relieve it. He can also meet with you virtually through telehealth to complete your initial symptom evaluation.
When should I seek medical attention for face pressure?
You should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Houston Ear Allergy and Rhinology Surgical Associates if you have persistent face pressure that doesn’t go away with rest and over-the-counter medications.
You might feel pressure in front of or behind your eyes, cheeks, or ears because of infections, inflammation, and allergies.
Dr. Sana completes a physical exam of your nose, sinuses, and ears and may order blood work or other diagnostic tests to confirm your diagnosis.
How is face pressure treated?
Based on your test results, Dr. Sana customizes a treatment plan to address the root cause of face pressure and pain. He may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications to address allergy-related inflammation or antibiotics to clear a sinus infection.
If medications aren’t working well to relieve face pressure, you may be a candidate for surgery. Dr. Sana offers several types of surgery on an outpatient basis, including:
Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgery to repair a deviated septum. Dr. Sana realigns the wall that divides your nasal passages to improve your breathing. This type of surgery can reduce your risk for sinus infections and ear infections that contribute to face pain.
Inferior Turbinate Reduction
Inferior turbinate reduction is a surgery to reduce enlarged turbinates and thin bones in the nasal cavity.
These bony structures can enlarge in size, obstruct airflow through your nasal passages, and also cause face pressure and pain. Reducing their size can improve your breathing and eliminate pressure and other symptoms.
Sinus Surgery
Dr. Sana is using the latest surgical techniques and performs endoscopic surgery through the nose to open the sinus cavities and remove any debris and diseased tissues to relieve face pressure. Pain is usually mild and well-controlled with medication.
Even after surgery, you may still need to take allergy medications to treat underlying issues. Dr. Sana discusses what ongoing treatments you may have.
